日本の文化
とりあえず、英語はしたのほうにのっけることにしてみました。
今日は再び来ました、この挑戦。
それは、『日本の"あわれ"の文化を英語で外人に伝える』。
バンクーバーでは、なんで桜が日本の国花か、どうして日本人は桜をそんなに好きなのか、を英語で説明するのに挑戦しました。
桜は確かに綺麗だけれど、一年のうちで数週間しか花が咲かなくて、花が散ればイモ虫で覆われる困った木を、どうして日本人は好きなのか？
名前は忘れたんだけれども、韓国では長く美しく花をつける植物が国花なんだとか。真っ赤な花だった記憶がある。
当時は、ものの儚さを日本人は憂う、という表現したように記憶しています。
森羅万象は儚いからこそその瞬間・瞬間を美しいと感じるのであって、儚くなければ、その尊さを感じることはできないんじゃないか、と。
だから日本人は儚く移り変わる季節や、すぐに儚く散ってしまう桜が大好きなんじゃないか、と。
これを説明したのは、丁度『国家の品格』を読んだ直後だったから大分影響を受けている気がします。
でも自分でもそう思ったので、当時はそう説明した気がする。
ちなみに意味はわかるけど、まったく納得しない、というのが当時の韓国人の友達の感想でした。
で、二回目。
今回はベネズエラ人。
今回は彼がすでに日本に強い興味を持っていて、すでにある程度日本を知っていたのが救いだったように思います。
今回は
Venezuelan
『日本の国旗は今はシンプルだけど、昔はshining sunみたいなやつがあったでしょ？俺はあれが好きなんだよね。』
といわれ、
kyo-hei
『俺、今のシンプルなほうが好きかな。なんかシンプルなゆえに深遠さを感じるから。その深遠さが日本人の感覚に通じるような気がするんだよ。』
て答えたわけです。
すると彼は立て続けに質問してきたわけです。

『日本人の深遠さって何？』
で、俺の考える深遠さ。"儚さ"に関する解説スタート。
四季の話を持ってきたり、方丈記の冒頭の
『行く川の流れは絶えずして、しかももとの水にあらず。』
を述べてみたり(日本語で言った後に英語で解説)、
色々ためしたんですが、中々わかってもらません。
ところが、
"Even the greatest country will change for sure, Also even the most poor country will change in the future for sure. Nothing will keep the same condition."
と言った時に彼の表情が変わりました。彼はこう反応しました。
"Nothing is forever?"
まさにその通り。最高の言葉です。
"Nothing is forever."
覚えます。
しかし、日本の文化を説明するのは難しいなぁ。一番難しい。
次回はもっとうまく説明できるようにがんばります。

Title: Japanese culture
The last week for me has started.
Unit 94 about "The most impressive time in your life"
We will discuss education system, school life and after school and so on.
Something new happened. In my business lessoon, we talked about Merger and aquisition. Those kinds of English was quite easy for me such as ''White knight'', ''LBO'', and ''MBO.''
Actually it was quite interesting to have a discussion on a business topic. For example, ''Wall Mart is hated by all Amricans. But why?'' It was interesing. Because they don't like this company because of insurance, because of wage and because of their big market share. However, how about see from the view of customers? They offer very reasonable products. I felt that Amricans are more enthusiastic than I expected.
When it came to Mittal and Alcerol, the luxembrougish guy became lively!! He talked many things related to this topic.
We also talked about Volvo and TOYOTA, and some about GM.
Now, let's get into main today's topic.
I went to a sushi restaurant named "Shino Express" along Newburry st, which is famous for its new boutique shops. It is like Boston's "Daikan-yama" in "Chikyu-no-arukikata"
A Venezuelan and two Japanese and I went togethr after school.
During going to that shop, the Venezuelan guy and I were talking about Japanese culture.
First, he asked me about YAKUZA. YAKUZA is similar to Maphia.
I replied that YAMAGUCHI-Group, which is one of Yakuza groups, is the most famous and the strongest group.
We were talking about sports and Pachinko, and "Aware." I did never mention "Aware." But I introduced the begining of "Houjo-ki."
"行く川の流れは絶えずして、しかももとの水にあらず。"
I tried to transfer this idea to him. However, it was too hard to explain.
However, at last, I said
"Nothing has been forever."
I think it's a really good expression.
Can you imagine this image?
I think that this idea also connect with why Japanese people like cherry blossoms very much and why people prefer four seasons and how people enjoy each season as it is.
It is highlight today to try to explain Japanese culure in Japanese.
I think I'll try again someweher sometimes.
